The beauty of Google Earth Engine is that, when someone wants to show impact on a global scale - whether it be socioeconomic or environmental - the content provided by the platform makes it easier than it ever was to demonstrate change and communicate important message about our planet. At the Geo for Good Summit this year, we were pleased to be asked to demonstrate our work on Coastal Risk. It was a privilege to be asked and to see other attendees reactions to it, but as an organisation we were not lost on some of the other amazing initiatives out there. We have listed what we believe to be some of the leading Google Earth Engine initiaitives out there, we encourage you to check them out. PLUS CODES Plus codes are based on latitude and longitude – the grid that can be used to describe every point on the planet. By using a simpler code system, they end up much shorter and easier to use than traditional global coordinates. The best part about plus codes is that it gives addresses to everyone, everywhere, allowing them to receive deliveries, access emergency services, register to vote, and are already improving peoples' lives. This is particularly useful for Indigenous communities. A plus code address looks like a regular address, but with a short code where the street name and number would be. These addresses exist for any location, even for places where there are no roads. VISIT THE WEBSITE MAPBIOMAS When we saw this at Geo for Good, we thought it was a great example of the multi-content and multi-satellite approach to deforestation monitoring. The team at Mapbiomas use Google Earth Engine and Planet. It’s a great website and provides full coverage, freely available content with the ability to access high resolution reports for impacted areas with Planet data. VISIT THE WEBSITE GLOBAL DEAL FOR NATURE The Global Deal for Nature is a science-based, time-bound plan to save the abundance and diversity of life on Earth. The paper contends that in order for the Paris Climate Agreement to succeed, we need an accompanying deal for protecting and restoring nature — thus, A Global Deal for Nature. At Geo for Good, the Global Deal for Nature team showed how their project uses Google Earth Engine for conservation analysis and benchmarking VISIT THE WEBSITE GLOBAL FISHING WATCH Global Fishing Watch is a great initiative using Big Query and Earth Engine to monitor illegal fishing activity. The team is committed to advancing ocean sustainability and stewardship through increasing transparency. They do this by offering, for free, data and near real-time tracking of global commercial fishing activity, supporting new science and research, and boosting the global dialogue on ocean transparency.
