This year the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) member countries and other distinguished delegates descended upon Canberra for the 2019 GEO Week Ministerial Summit.
GEO is an intergovernmental partnership of 105 member governments, 127 participating organisations and thousands of passionate individuals and businesses that improves the availability, access and use of earth observations for a more sustainable planet.
At this year’s Summit, EO Data Science and Google Earth Engine exhibited together and announced a program to collaborate with and support GEO members and partners to drive global impact with Earth Observations.
The GEO-Google Earth Engine program announced by the Director of Google Earth Engine, Rebecca Moore, Director Secretariat of GEO, Gilberto Camara and Executive Director of EO Data Science, Nathan Eaton, will support GEO member countries by helping to operationalise their science as they strive to tackle the world’s biggest sustainable development challenges. The program will provide dedicated Google Earth Engine licensing for two years for up to 25 projects worth USD $3 million, along with dedicated support and outreach services to help operationalise earth observations.
The program provides eligible applicants with the access they need to Google Earth Engine as they attempt to bridge the gap between science and application. The products built by successful applicants will enhance engagement with end users and decision makers to enact positive change.
The GEO-Google Earth Engine program will enable initiatives that aim to deliver significant impact with respect to environmental and development goals, this includes:
· The Sendai Framework for disaster risk reduction
· The Paris Agreement (UNFCCC COP21)
· The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Initiatives that address ocean conservation and biodiversity preservation through the use of earth observations and data science are also encouraged.
EO Data Science will provide in-kind technical support and mentoring through an outreach program to help the eligible GEO members get the results from they require from Google Earth Engine.
“We are excited to be a part of this wonderful initiative and we are very much looking forward to working with GEO members and partners to deliver high impact solutions” said Nathan Eaton, General Manager at EO Data Science.
“Our mission is to partner with organisations to operationalise earth observations by leveraging cloud technology and data science to address specific outcomes and we very much welcome the opportunity to collaborate with GEO,”
“We believe the Google Earth Engine platform will help to scale science and put the outcomes in the hands of the decision makers to deliver positive change,” he said.
